Days 1-4- June 11, 12, 18, 19
R.I.S.E. Academy is a year-long blended learning professional development. The training will provide educators with an in depth knowledge related to the science of reading, evidence-based instructional strategies, and making data-based decisions for ALL students. Participants will attend 6 days of face-to-face training (Summer – 4 days , and 2 days during the year. Participants will also be expected to participate in a blended learning community throughout the year with coaching and collaboration.
SCSC - Straight Out of Read Alouds: Vocabulary Instruction
Do you love read alouds but not sure how to best utilize that instructional time in your kindergarten or first grade classroom? This event focuses on instruction that will show students how to use a wide range of strategies through teacher modeling of the behaviors displayed by good readers and providing a model of fluent and expressive reading. Vocabulary growth is of vital importance, so explicit vocabulary instruction for read alouds will be modeled as well as an opportunity to share. SCSC - Word Play: Having Fun with Phonics
Do you want to know how to tell your kindergarten or first grade students WHY certain words look or sound the way they do? This event focuses on instructional approaches aimed at exploring the sound, pattern, and meaning relationships among words to develop children's phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, and vocabulary. Students are guided towards making discoveries about how words work and generalizing their understandings in order to read, spell, and write more efficiently. SCSC - Choosing the Right Texts for Small Group Reading
Do you go to the school book room and feel overwhelmed? Do you think it is of extreme importance to choose the right books and analyze those texts for small group instruction in your reading groups but not sure how? This event will help teachers be better equipped to choose appropriate material based on a scope and sequence for decoding as well as instruction for instant word recognition. SCSC - Picture Perfect STEM for K-5
Would you like to learn how to integrate STEM and literacy? Using children's picture books to inspire STEM is a meaningful way! Picture Perfect STEM adds emphasis on the intersection of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that are related to the real world. Participants will learn to use scientific inquiry, the 5E instructional model, and reading comprehension strategies to integrate STEM into the elementary classroom. SCSC - From Word Wall to Sound Wall
Do you have a word wall up in your room but struggle to use it efficiently? Word walls have been posted in our classrooms for years; some as a mandate by the district, others due to status quo. “It's the way we have always done things." Come join us and learn why replacing a word wall with a better and more effective sound wall can help students connect phonology and orthography. Sound walls can serve as an “anchor” to teach letter-sound knowledge. Articulatory features to clarify production of speech sounds will be demonstrated and practiced. Participants will become aware of the 44 phonemes as well as examine common spelling patterns in the English language. Examples on how to setup and use the sound wall in your classroom will be modeled.
SCSC-Ignite Oral Language and Vocabulary in Your Classroom and Reading Sparks Will Fly!
Come and get really interactive with us as we focus on how vocabulary and oral language develop in young children as well as the role that teachers play to promote vocabulary breadth and depth! What is systematic and explicit oral language instruction and what does it look like and sound like in the classroom? The instructional components of a literacy schedule will be discussed through conversation on how to embed this instruction with engaging and multi sensory activities found in the preschool, kindergarten, first, and second grade classroom.
