This initiative was developed to increase the depth of knowledge for teachers in the area of phonics and phonological awareness and how that knowledge impacts fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and writing. This includes focusing on the science of reading, or how a student learns. Last July, South Central Service Cooperative hosted our first R.I.S.E. Academy. Twenty-five teachers from grades K-2 received 18 hours of professional development in the science of reading. Throughout the 2017/18 school year, these teachers will be provided with an additional 18 hours of professional development as well as a regional support network comprised of ADE specialists, higher education representatives, and state and district literacy specialists.

Preliminary plans for SCSC R.I.S.E. Academy 2018/19 Cohort 2:
- Train and support 50 additional K-2 teachers
- Train and support 25 teachers of grades 3-6
